Description of LEED v4 certification
LEED v4 is the most recent version of the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). This widely recognized and internationally used rating system is used to the environmental sustainability of buildings. LEED aims to promote and advance sustainable construction and design practices.
With stricter requirements than previous versions, LEED v4 takes a holistic approach to sustainability, factoring in not only energy efficiency and water conservation, but also aspects such as:
- health and human experience (e.g., indoor air quality)
- waste management
- sustainable sites
- transportation
- materials
- social impacts
- innovation
- regional impacts
LEED v4 offers greater flexibility to project managers by allowing them to choose from a range of compliance options and green technologies as well as credits to achieve LEED certification levels (Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum). This version also places greater emphasis on the actual performance of buildings once they are occupied.
LEED v4 represents a significant development of the LEED system, which aims at promoting more sustainable construction and design practices than in the past and at responding to today’s environmental and social challenges.
Construction types covered by LEED v4
LEED v4 offers certification options to promote sustainability in construction for various building types and applications:
- Commercial buildings: offices, shopping centres, hotels, restaurants, etc.
- Institutional buildings: schools, hospitals, libraries and other public establishments
- Industrial buildings: factories, warehouses and other industrial facilities
- Residential buildings: apartments and condos, townhouses, single-family homes, etc.
- Government buildings: buildings used by government agencies at all levels
- Interior work: renovation and rehabilitation projects for interior spaces
These categories cover a wide range of projects so that many different types of buildings and infrastructure can target LEED v4 certification depending on their sustainability objectives.
Paint and LEED v4 certification
Paint plays an important role in LEED v4; it is a key component in the Sustainable Materials and Resources category. Here are some of the ways paint can contribute to LEED v4 certification.
- Indoor air quality: To reduce indoor air pollution, paints with low volatile organic compound (VOC) content are encouraged.
- Low-emitting materials: Paints used in LEED v4 projects can earn points for low VOC emissions and compliance with specific indoor air quality standards.
- Recycled content: Some types of paint contain recycled materials, which can increase the percentage of recycled content in a project and lead to additional points.
- Product durability: Durable paints, which are resistant to wear and abrasion and require less repainting, can reduce resource waste and consumption related to building maintenance; this is taken into account in the overall assessment of the project’s sustainability.
- Transparency in disclosing materials: As part of LEED v4 certification, it is often necessary to provide detailed information on the materials found in paints, including their origin, composition and environmental impacts.
MF Paints
MF Paints moffers its customers a selection of paints that comply with indoor air quality standards and sustainability criteria, which contributes significantly to LEED v4 certification. We aim to improve indoor air quality in buildings by reducing the environmental impact of our products. We also promote a holistic approach to sustainability in building design and construction.
EPD: The Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a standardized document that provides transparent information on a product’s environmental impact throughout its life cycle, from production to end of life. EPDs are based on life cycle analyses that comply with international standards, such as the ISO 14000 series.
HPD: The Health Product Declaration (HPD) is a standardized document for the transparent communication of information on the ingredients and health impacts of construction materials. The HPD provides details of the materials used in products, including any potentially hazardous chemical substances and information on any human health effects associated with these substances.
CDPH: CDPH standard method v1.2, is the most widely used standard in North America for VOC testing and assessing VOC emissions from building materials such as flooring, suspended ceilings, insulation, paints panelling and wall coverings. This standard is a reference for LEED v4 / 4.1 and many other green building rating systems and codes.
